Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
