Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
