Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages down to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
