Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police state they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then discovered multiple other marked vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials report early analysis suggest the substance was likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to where it came from; investigators are not yet cognizant of any injuries in connection with the event," they commented.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A senior political figure stated the incident made him without words and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine victims by a assailant focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
