Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to question certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
